NBA Summer League implements new experimental changes to games

  • Under this rule, most fouls will result in a single free throw that carries the cumulative point value of the original allocation, with conventional procedures remaining only in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime.
  • The Summer League frequently serves as a testing ground for potential NBA rule modifications, having previously introduced innovations like the coaches' challenge and the 14-second shot clock reset.
  • This year's Summer League will also feature "connected basketballs" with embedded sensors to collect data for future officiating applications, such as last-touch out-of-bounds calls.
  • Summer League play begins Friday with the California Classic, followed by events in Salt Lake City and the main NBA Summer League in Las Vegas from July 9-19, featuring top draft picks.
