NBA star Anthony Edwards has issued a grovelling apology on Twitter after he was seen using a homophobic slur in a video uploaded to Instagram. Edwards posted the clip to his 1.2 million followers on Saturday.
In the now deleted video, the 21-year-old is seen zooming into a group of people from his car before using the word ‘queer’ to describe them, whilst adding: “Look what the world done came to, bruh.”
Despite being deleted, the clip went viral on Twitter and the Minnesota Timberwolves man received widespread criticism for his offensive comments. On Sunday, Edwards issued his apology via a post on social media
He wrote: “What I said was immature, hurtful, and disrespectful, and I’m incredibly sorry.
“It’s unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such a hurtful way, there’s no excuse for it, at all. I was raised better than that!” It remains unknown as to whether Edwards will face any penalty from the NBA for his comments.
In 2021, Brooklyn Nets man Kevin Durant was handed a fine of $50,000 (£43,000) for a number of offensive comments made to actor Michael Rapoport.
As well as this, the likes of Kobe Bryant and Rajon Rondo have also been issued fines for using homophobic language whilst taking part in NBA games.
Edwards has spent three seasons with the Timberwolves, and was selected as the team’s number one pick in the 2020 draft. An impressive campaign in 2021 followed, and the 21-year-old was selected in the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team that year.
