It’s almost impressive. Even when Kyrie Irving decides to stay with a team, he manages to create drama around the decision.
Just hours after it seemed increasingly likely that Irving would seek a sign-and-trade opportunity to leave Brooklyn (which could have put Kevin Durant on the move as well), The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported a complete reversal on Irving’s part Monday evening.
According to The Athletic, Irving has decided to opt in for the $37 million player option and play out the 2022-23 season with the Nets. On top of that, Irving provided Charania with the most Kyrie Irving of quotes imaginable.
Kyrie Irving: “Normal people keep the world going, but those who dare to be different lead us into tomorrow. I’ve made my decision to opt in. See you in the fall. A11even.” https://t.co/rpiS8YkSZI

Uh, OK? He does realize he’s getting $37 million instead of the possible $6 million in Los Angeles, right? I’m not exactly sure how the first two sentences relate to the second half of the statement, but Kyrie did give NBA Twitter plenty of material to work with there.
They didn’t disappoint.
