NBA 2K24 is out now, and it’s already one of the worst-rated games on Steam thanks to player dissatisfaction over the sports game’s microtransactions and PC version. After four days and nearly 3,000 reviews, NBA 2K24 on Steam has an “Overwhelmingly Negative” tag and a score ranking that puts it just behind Overwatch 2 as the second worst-rated Steam game ever.
NBA 2K24’s microtransactions are more present than ever, thanks to a market redesign that let you purchase nearly any MyTeam card you want. A common thread of complaints is that the new system makes NBA 2K24 “pay-to-win” in its online multiplayer game modes, since players can purchase as many high-level cards as they want, so long as they can afford it.
Another recurring theme is anger over NBA 2K24’s presentation on PC. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions take advantage of new technology that 2K and Visual Concepts said would improve animations. The PC version does not, though 2K never said why. Several Steam users reported recurring bugs and errors, including some that they say carried over from NBA 2K23, which led to accusations that 2K and Visual Concepts “copied and pasted” content between the two games.
Confusion over NBA 2K24’s crossplay also pops up frequently in Steam reviews. It supports crossplay on current-gen platforms – but not in all of them, and some players assumed every mode featured crossplay.
2K and Visual Concepts haven’t said whether they plan on introducing next-gen upgrades in a future update.
