Nauru tells the UN it has a new name: ‘It has been there all along’

  • President David Adeang announced to the United Nations General Assembly that the South Pacific island nation of Nauru is reverting to its traditional name, Naoero.
  • The shift in spelling and pronunciation from 'Now-roo' to 'Now-ero' reflects the name used internally by the island's inhabitants rather than the foreign adaptation.

  • The move follows a global trend of nations updating their official names to shed colonial legacies and reaffirm indigenous heritage.
