Gandhian, writer and nature-lover Sreeman Narayanan, who figured in the Prime Minister’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme, has been engaged in planting trees and spreading the idea of providing drinking water to birds during the summer.
Mr. Narayanan has been in the news for distributing clay pots for providing water for birds. He has also helped plant trees and distribute hundreds of books on Mahatma Gandhi. The theme of his mission is ‘Ente Gramam Gandhijiyilude’ (My village through Gandhiji).
Living in Muppathadam near Kochi, Mr. Narayanan has supplied clay pots to the Mangalavanam bird sanctuary in the city. He said on Sunday that one lakh clay pots had been given to people willing to fill them with water and place them where birds congregated. The last of the one lakh pots would be presented to the Prime Minister, he added.
Every year, about 10,000 clay pots were distributed to people, he said. About 15,000 tree saplings would be given away on June 5, observed as World Environment Day, he added. The total number of saplings distributed so far amounted to about two lakh, said Mr. Narayanan.
