Natural Bridge fire doesn’t grow overnight; rain on the way

There’s good news to report from the fire at Natural Bridge State Resort Park. Mike McMillan is a public information officer for the U.S. Forest Service, which is teaming with state forestry crews to battle the blaze. He spoke with WEKU News Friday morning.

“This is the first night, last night, that we didn't have any, any breach of our containment lines. And that means that no fire escapes the lines that we have in place to stop or slow the spread of the fire.”

McMillan said while the fire grew to 125 acres, the containment level was 60 percent. He said Friday’s expected warm temperatures could pose a problem, but rain is forecast for the evening and overnight.

“Well, that's going to help a lot just to suppress any of the interior fire that we can't reach, you know, in the cliff areas, and some of the heavier fuels some of the larger trees that are still smoking that that are more difficult to reach.”

McMillan said the downside of the rain is that it will make everything more slippery, particularly on steep slopes. Trails at the park and the skylift have been shut down since Tuesday.
