NATO’s Trump whisperer visits the White House after Hegseth’s European forces declaration

  • NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump on Wednesday to address Trump's ongoing criticisms of the military alliance and his renewed threats to withdraw the United States , ahead of the annual NATO summit.
  • Trump has consistently expressed dissatisfaction with NATO, arguing the U.S. bears an disproportionate share of military spending and criticizing member countries for not supporting his efforts to restart oil trade through the Strait of Hormuz following the Iran war.
  • The visit follows Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's announcement of a six-month Pentagon review of American forces in Europe, where he echoed Trump's critiques and faulted allies for not allowing the U.S. to use European bases for attacks on Iran.
  • Rutte, often referred to as a 'Trump whisperer,' aims to appease the President and prevent a U.S. withdrawal from the 77-year-old alliance, a key part of his mission to maintain American involvement in NATO.
  • Rutte has publicly praised Trump, crediting him for increased NATO defense spending and expressing full support for his Iran initiatives during a recent Fox News interview, despite past instances of his flattery raising eyebrows among allies.
