The federal government has beefed up Australia's version of the White House's situation room to make it even more nimble when dealing with life-threatening disasters.
An upgrade of the technology and logistics capabilities of the National Situation Room has been completed by the National Emergency Management Agency, in line with the 2020 recommendations made by the bushfires royal commission.
The NSR provides 24/7 crisis management for natural disasters, terrorism events, cyber security emergencies and other threats and can pull together information to help state-based emergency services to plan and prepare.
"By bringing together all the relevant agencies into one room we can respond quickly to life-threatening crises as they occur," Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said on Wednesday in a statement.
It also provides advice to the federal government to support its rapid response to stricken communities.
In the past the NRS, previously known as the Australian Government Crisis Coordination Centre, has responded to multiple events including the 2014 Lindt Cafe siege and the 2018 Tham Luang Cave rescue in Thailand.
