President Biden is convening longtime aides in the White House residence to watch election returns, but one of his seniormost advisers is not on hand tonight, a White House official says.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan, who served in that same role when Biden was vice president and also served as a policy adviser on his 2020 campaign, is instead in New Hampshire with his wife, Maggie Goodlander, who is running to represent the Granite State’s second congressional district.
Goodlander’s candidacy has primarily focused on reproductive rights, with her own harrowing experience with pregnancy complications spurring her initially to run. She has also faced questions on issues that have vexed the Biden administration, including the state’s cost of living and US’s arms shipments to Israel, a policy where Sullivan has often been the public face.
