Recent drone sightings over New Jersey and other parts of the U.S. have raised concerns about airspace security, according to President-elect Trump's pick for National Security Adviser, Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla. Waltz emphasized the need to address gaps in airspace security that exist between various agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, local law enforcement, and the Defense Department.
Waltz also highlighted the importance of implementing a system similar to Israel's Iron Dome, which is a mobile air defense system designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells. He suggested that such a system should also address threats posed by drones, in addition to traditional adversarial actions like hypersonic missiles.
While the outgoing Biden administration has downplayed concerns over the drone sightings, stating that most reports involve manned aircraft and that there is no evidence of a national security threat, some Democrats have called for more transparency and attention to the public's worries.
Despite assurances from the administration that the drones are not being operated by foreign countries, the lack of clarity on the issue has left Americans frustrated. The need for a comprehensive approach to address drone sightings and enhance airspace security has become increasingly apparent.
