Academy Award-winning directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi are returning to their documentary roots with the upcoming National Geographic docuseries titled 'Photographer.' The six-part series features seven renowned photographers, including Cristina Mittermeier, Paul Nicklen, Dan Winters, Campbell Addy, Krystle Wright, Muhammed Muheisen, and Anand Varma.
The showrunners have enlisted six veteran documentary filmmakers to bring each photographer's story to life. The series aims to showcase how each photographer approaches their work, their intentions, processes, and unique perspectives on the world.
In the first episode, Chin and Vasarhelyi focus on ocean photographers Nicklen and Mittermeier, highlighting their efforts to raise awareness through their art and nonprofit organization, SeaLegacy. The episode follows the duo as they document seagrass beds in the Bahamas and take a stand against oil drilling.
The second episode delves into Varma's innovative techniques in capturing intimate images of nature. The series also features episodes on other photographers like Wright, who faces a life-altering medical emergency that prompts her to reevaluate her career and personal life.
The filmmakers behind 'Photographer' aim to emphasize the power of photography in affecting real change and showcasing the diversity and breadth of the art form. The series premieres on National Geographic on March 18 and will be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on March 19.
