National columnists go head-to-head as Euro 2024 Charity sweepstake continues

TWO National columnists are set to go head to head in The National’s Euro 2024 sweepstake as the group stage action continues.

Kelly Given’s Poland will be taking on Ruth Wishart’s Austria as both sides look to pick up their first points of the tournament.

Despite losing their openers however, both sides gave a good account of themselves.

Poland found themselves 1-0 up against the Netherlands although fell behind 2-1 in the 83rd minute and failed to find an equaliser.

Austria meanwhile were defeated 1-0 by France, one of the tournament favourites and recent World Cup finalists.

It should be an entertaining match-up as Given hopes to raise money for Medical Aid for Palestinians while Wishart has chosen Médecins Sans Frontières as her charity.

The game will kick off at 5pm and will be available to watch on STV.

Elsewhere, in what is perhaps the biggest game of the day, Ian Blackford (above) will play Zara Gladman as the Netherlands take on France.

It’s expected to be one of the standout matches of the group stages and both will be hoping their team can pick up a win after getting off to a good start.

Former SNP Westminster leader Blackford is playing for Skye-based charity Lucky2BeHere while Gladman has also picked Medical Aid for Palestinians.

It’s the later kick-off and so the match will start at 8pm on BBC One.

We also have Slovakia vs Ukraine which will see Jenny Colgan go up against Elaine C Smith (below).

It was a contrasting start for the pair with Slovakia, drawn by Colgan, securing a fantastic 1-0 win over heavily-favoured Belgium.

Ukraine meanwhile were beaten comfortably by Romania 3-0 and so will be hoping to bounce back to keep themselves in the competition.

Colgan is playing for Kidney Research UK and Smith has Scottish Women’s Aid as her charity.
