National Best Friends Day: How is it celebrated and what is its history?

Thursday June 8 is National Best Friends Day – a chance to pay tribute to your nearest and dearest, and let them know you love them.

Brits are being encouraged to reach out to their ride or dies – the friends who are always there, no matter what the weather, at a moment’s notice.

The annual event is a celebration of besties.

A Days of the Year spokesman said: “Friendships are an indestructible bond that join many people together in beautiful ways. Celebrating best friends day is just one of the ways you can acknowledge your super sidekick and show them how much you love them.

“They are the Batman to your Robin, the sugar to your spice, the sand to your sea.”

The topic is trending on Twitter with a range of cute tributes being made.

Here’s everything we know about the holiday.

When did National Best Friends Day start?

The buddy love-in originated in the US. In 1935 Congress decided there should be a day that celebrated friendship. Hallmark got involved, encouraging people to send out cards to mark the day.

In 1997 Winnie the Pooh was named the world’s ambassador of friendship at the United Nations and in April 2011 the United Nations officially recognised the holiday as the International Friendship Day.

How can I celebrate National Best Friends Day?

Why not share a snap of you and your best friend or friends on social media with the tag #NationalBestFriendsDay to show them what they mean to you. Already feeds are already filling with heartwarming posts and quotes.

Alternatively you could meet up with your friends, whether that be for a coffee, picnic or even a walk.
