The day after the hottest temperature in June in Japan history was recorded in a Gunma Prefecture city, central Tokyo experienced its hottest day ever for the month, with the mercury climbing to 36.2 C on Sunday.
Sunday was the second consecutive day in which the temperature exceeded 35 C in Tokyo. Not since records began in 1875 have temperatures exceeded 35 C in the capital so early in the year.
On Saturday, the temperature in the Gunma Prefecture city of Isesaki hit 40.2 C, the nation's highest ever in June.
