It only took one snap for Nathan Peterman to make himself the butt of the joke yet again.
Peterman, whose career has been marked by his propensity for throwing interceptions, served as the Bears’ backup quarterback Sunday behind Tyson Bagent, the undrafted rookie playing in place of the injured Justin Fields. And while Bagent put together an efficient day as a passer, Bears coach Matt Eberflus turned to Peterman for a Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half due to his superior arm strength. And while that may have been a good idea on paper, the result was meme-worthy.
Peterman was forced to roll out of the pocket thanks to pressure by the Raiders defense. He then uncorked an errant throw that got nowhere close to the end zone.

Fox broadcaster Kevin Kugler’s call was hilarious, setting up the call like a normal Hail Mary before a dejected “and the ball goes nowhere” after Peterman’s rough attempt.
For what it’s worth, Bagent claimed postgame that he has enough arm strength to get the ball to the end zone in that situation, telling reporters “I’ve got a cannon” in his postgame press conference. Meanwhile, Eberflus attributed the decision to Peterman’s “big arm,” which obviously didn’t lead to anything Sunday.
We can all keep hoping for more Peterman lowlights, at least for as long as Bagent remains the starter in Chicago.
