Nathan Patterson returns to Everton for scan as Scotland star set for anxious wait over extent of injury

Nathan Patterson is heading back to Merseyside as he faces an anxious wait for news on the extent of his latest lay-off. Scotland ace had to be stretchered down the tunnel as he lasted less than half an hour of Wednesday’s impressive win over Ukraine before suffering a fresh injury scare.

The former Rangers kid has only just recently returned from ankle surgery and will now fear another stint on the sidelines could stunt his Goodison career just as it’s getting into full flow. The 20-year-old right back has been in sensational form for Frank Lampard’s Toffees this term having finally broken into the Premier League outfit’s line-up after a difficult first six months south of the border.

He’s started all seven of their English top flight games this campaign so far, winning rave reviews from the Everton faithful. But the £12million signing is now on his way back to the club’s Finch Farm training base, where he will have a scan before awaiting news from the Everton’s medical team on how long he can expect to spend on the sidelines this time.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke is keeping his fingers crossed it won't be long. Speaking after his team’s 3-0 victory, he said: "It doesn't look too good when he goes off on a stretcher. He obviously felt something on his leg, we'll just wait and see what the medics say and how it pans out. Hopefully, it's not too serious and hopefully he's not out too long.”

Lampard will also be hoping Patterson makes a speedy recovery as his injury woes mount further. Star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has not played yet this season after suffering an injury in training on the eve of the season. Key defenders Yerry Mina and Ben Godfrey have also been out, while keeper Jordan Pickford is currently recovering from a knock of his own.

The defender himself has also broken his silence following last night's clash. He wrote: "Thanks for all the messages last night. Really appreciate the support. The boys were great from start to finish."
