Nathan Patterson in major Everton injury fear as luckless Scotland star carried away on stretcher

Luckless Nathan Patterson was forced off injured just over 20 minutes into Scotland's Nations League clash with Ukraine.

The right-back has been in fine form for Everton after recovering from an ankle problem that required surgery back in April. That ensured his Toffees career didn't get off the ground until this summer when the impressive 20-year-old forced his way into Frank Lampard's plans.

But now he's cruelly suffered a fresh setback after sustaining what appeared to be a knee injury at Hampden on Wednesday night. Patterson landed awkwardly when battling for the ball and although he was able to walk off the pitch, a stretcher was soon called for the former Rangers youngster. He was replaced by Brentford's Aaron Hickey as Steve Clarke was forced to look to his bench early on a huge night for the national team, one that requires three points to get their Group B1 campaign back on track after a 3-0 defeat to Ireland back in June.

Scotland host Ireland at Hampden on Saturday in a hotly-anticipated clash under the lights. It's then off to Warsaw for Clarke's side for another showdown with the Ukrainians.
