Nate Diaz sends blunt message to Conor McGregor about trilogy fight

Nate Diaz has bluntly told Conor McGregor he needs to return to winning form before pursuing a trilogy fight between the pair.

Diaz is currently on the last fight of his contract and has been linked to a third fight with his rival McGregor, who is still recovering from a broken leg.

The duo first met six years ago at UFC 196 when Diaz stepped up on 11 days' notice to hand McGregor his first-ever loss in the promotion.

But McGregor would avenge his loss to the fan favourite Diaz just four months later, outpointing him in a thrilling fight at UFC 202.

Their trilogy has been expected to take place ever since, but with Diaz taking several hiatuses from the cage the fight has never materialised.

And Diaz has brutally told McGregor - who has lost three of his last four fights - he has lots of work to do.

"Not right now. He got a lot of work to do," Diaz told Adam's Apple when asked about a third fight with McGregor.

Diaz took three years away from the cage after his loss to McGregor and has only fought three times since then, losing two of those bouts.

Struggling to get the final fight on his contract booked, Diaz has turned to calling out fighters on social media recently.

And of this he said: "Only because I can’t physically get to them, otherwise I gotta spit it on the thing.

“I’m on my last fight of my contract right now. I would like to fight Dustin Poirier now. Now. Next month when s*** changes, and people win and start doing something entertaining, or something going, then it’s going to be all different.”

McGregor has been linked to fights with Diaz, Tony Ferguson and Michael Chandler upon his eventual return in July.

The former two-weight world champion's longtime coach John Kavanagh also welcomed the Diaz trilogy and said the pair are "perfectly made opponents".

"That would be a way to end it wouldn't it. I think Conor only has one or two left as well," Kavanagh told Mirror Fighting.

"The Nate trilogy I just think those two guys are like Batman and the Joker, they're going to face each other forever. It's almost unimportant who wins.

"They are just perfectly made opponents. It's great fun to build up, they both snipe at each other a lot but there's a bit of the tip of the hat as well.

"They're both warriors and both great fighters, it would be lovely to see that trilogy."
