Nashville man flies 5,000 miles to Germany to surprise his girlfriend. She was like, ‘why are you here’: ‘This is a big deal’

A Nashville man is seen surprising his girlfriend in Germany after flying what he said more than 5,000 miles to hand her a letter in person. The moment was shared in a video by creator Riley Lemon (@riley.lemon) on TikTok, where it has been viewed 11.5 million times and received 592,900 likes.

The video shows the man arriving in Germany with a suitcase, walking to his girlfriend’s apartment, and knocking on her door. When she opens it, she looks shocked before breaking into a smile.

“Surprise!” he says. On-screen text shows her reaction as “OH MY GOD!” He then asks her for a hug. She asks him, “Why are you here?” He holds up a small white envelope with the name “Karin” written on it and tells her, “Because I wanted to give you this letter.” She responds, “Why did you not mail it?”

The letter was opened a day later during a car ride

The video then jumps forward with on-screen text reading “24 hours later…” showing the couple sitting in a car. The woman holds the same envelope and says, “Here’s the letter.” He tells her, “Open it, open it.”

As she starts to open it, she says, “I’m kind of nervous.” He responds, “I know, I am too. This is a big deal.” Her expression changes from nervous to shocked, then to joy, as she reads the letter and says, “No way!” The video ends with on-screen text reading “to be continued…”, without showing what the letter said.

A follow-up video posted on TikTok by Riley picks up the story. It replays the moment she reads the letter and reacts with, “No way! When?” He replies, “Right now.” She asks again, “Right now?” He tells her, “We have 2 hours. Yes, let’s go! We have literally 2 hours.”

The follow-up video then shows the couple walking through an airport with their luggage. It shows her holding a German passport and him holding a U.S. passport. They are then shown boarding a plane together. Such public reactions to surprise gestures can be intense, as when a man proposed at Boston’s Fenway Park and his girlfriend’s response shocked the crowd for all the wrong reasons.

After landing, the video shows them riding in a van, with the woman pointing out the window at the scenery. The clip then shows scenes from Vietnam, including an outdoor cafe on Hanoi’s Train Street as a train passes by, and streets filled with motorbikes near a “BÁNH MỲ” sign. The video also shows the couple on a boat in a bay with tall limestone cliffs and green water, wearing traditional Vietnamese conical hats and life vests.

The caption on the follow-up video asks viewers to guess the destination before it is revealed. The follow-up video’s caption is: “Drop your guesses where you think we are before we reveal it…” Such gift-giving misfires can have serious consequences, as when a man spent nearly 2500 on a gaming PC for his girlfriend and she ended their three year relationship the next day.

The videos have drawn a range of reactions in the comments section. Many viewers may relate to the rush of emotion her reaction seems to capture, though it’s worth noting that the authenticity of the moment can’t be confirmed. Scripted or staged surprise videos have become increasingly common among influencers looking to drive engagement, and there’s no way to independently verify whether this exchange unfolded exactly as shown.

Some viewers questioned the girlfriend’s response to the surprise. One commenter wrote, “why are you here” “why did you not mail it”??? I do not like these questions one bit. Seems rude and not very loving at all.” Another viewer suspected someone else may have been in the apartment at the time, writing, “To be honest, I really thought due to her reaction, there was another person in the apartment.”

One comment guessed at the contents of the letter with a joke: “SPOILER ALERT: He got her an extended car warranty.” Another viewer questioned whether the video was staged, writing, “Wasn’t the reaction I expected….. I feel like all this was staged.” A different commenter defended the girlfriend’s reaction, writing, “As a German woman this is very much how we react to surprises.”

Whether the exchange between Karin and Riley was staged remains unclear, and if it was genuine, there may be context missing from the clips that could explain her initial reaction. Even so, a number of commenters made clear they weren’t satisfied with how she responded to what came across as a heartfelt gesture.

Then again, it’s also possible he’d done something to upset her beforehand that isn’t shown in the clips.
