September Nasdaq 100 E-Mini futures (NQU26) are down -1.77% this morning as chipmakers came under heavy selling pressure after leaders of major AI companies called for a slower pace of AI development.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in an essay on Saturday that it was time to slow the pace of AI development, citing risks posed by today’s most advanced systems. The Anthropic boss called on the industry to pace the development of frontier AI models, proposing measures such as greater coordination among democratic countries and embedded third-party safety evaluators. Amodei’s position was backed in social media posts by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, xAI chief Elon Musk, and Demis Hassabis, chair of Google’s DeepMind division. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump downplayed the AI risks, while China rejected them as “fearmongering.”
