MEXICO CITY (AP) — NASCAR is gearing up for its first points-paying international Cup Series race in modern history at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez in June. This event marks a significant milestone as NASCAR's top series will compete outside of the United States for only the third time in 77 years.

Despite initial excitement over the new venue in Mexico City, rumors have circulated within the industry questioning the race's feasibility, security, and safety. However, NASCAR remains committed to the venture with a two-year contract with promoter OCESA, known for hosting large-scale entertainment events, including Formula 1 races.

During a recent two-day promotional tour in Mexico City, NASCAR stars Daniel Suarez, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, and Christopher Bell immersed themselves in the local culture. The visit included activities such as a track walk, taco tasting, attending a Lucha Libre wrestling match, and engaging with fans at a news conference.

Suarez expressed his excitement in showcasing his home country to his fellow competitors, emphasizing the unique experience of exploring Mexico City beyond typical tourist destinations. The drivers' positive experiences during the visit aimed to promote NASCAR's upcoming race and generate enthusiasm among fans.

For OCESA, the tour served as a gauge of market interest in NASCAR, as the organization navigates negotiations with Formula One Management for a contract extension while preparing for the relaunch of NASCAR in Mexico City. Talks with IndyCar for a potential 2026 event are on hold pending the outcome of NASCAR's reception in the market.

The drivers' visit to Mexico City not only provided them with a memorable experience but also allowed them to convey a positive message about the upcoming race. Chief Operating Officer Steve O'Donnell highlighted the drivers' enthusiasm and hoped for a ripple effect of positive feedback within the NASCAR community.

Blaney, who pledged to learn Spanish before the race, praised the beauty of Mexico City and dispelled concerns about attending the event. Elliott, known as NASCAR's most popular driver, echoed Blaney's sentiments, emphasizing the warm reception and impressive venue.

Overall, the drivers' visit to Mexico City served as a testament to the potential success of NASCAR's international expansion. With anticipation building for the historic race in June, NASCAR aims to captivate fans worldwide and solidify its presence on the global motorsports stage.
