NASA's NISAR satellite Antarctica image captures a giant bird-like shape hidden in East Antarctica's ice; here's what the colourful radar view means

A joint India-US Earth observation satellite has released data from both of its radar instruments. The satellite has captured a stunning image over East Antarctica that appears to show a giant bird with outstretched wings etched into the frozen landscape.

NASA said the data from Earth-orbiting US-India NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite’s L-band radar was used to produce an image of Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja — a mountaintop in East Antarctica. The information can help researchers monitor the movement of land and ice, study forests and wetlands, and respond to natural hazards including earthquakes, landslides and floods.
