Robbie Mayer, a former detective with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, compared the Nancy Guthrie investigation to one of the biggest cases of his career. Mayer helped solve the “Prime Time Rapist” case in Tucson during the 1980s after investigators worked through thousands of leads over several years, as per a report by SheKnows.
Speaking with News 4 Tucson, Mayer explained how difficult it can be for investigators to identify the one important clue hidden among massive amounts of information.
“One of the detectives had Larriva’s name as a lead, but he hadn’t gotten to it yet because he had so many leads in front of that,” Mayer recalled.
Now, Mayer believes something similar may be happening in the Nancy Guthrie case, as per a report by SheKnows.
“The suspect’s names are in those 50,000” tips generated in Savannah Guthrie’s mother’s case, he said.
Mayer added that solving a case like this requires persistence from investigators. “The question is if they can recognize it when they see it,” he explained. “Being in a case like this is like being in a field with rocks, and what you’re looking for is under one rock. You just have to keep turning.”

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31 after her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, dropped her off at her Tucson home. When she failed to attend church services the following morning, she was reported missing.
The disappearance quickly became a major national story, especially after Savannah Guthrie temporarily stepped away from the Today show to focus on helping search for her mother, as per a report by SheKnows.
On May 12, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department shared an update as the investigation crossed the 100-day mark. Authorities said “scientific evidence processing and digital media analysis remain ongoing,” but confirmed that no suspect has been arrested.
