Nan slams state of children's park as 'accident waiting to happen'

A nan has said she is concerned for the safety of her grandchildren after a park was left in an "horrendous state".

Parents taking their children to Derby Park in Bootle were met with cans of Carling scattered across the playground. Angie, from Litherland, said her granddaughter could not go down the slide as there were so many cans of beer in the way.

Angie has contacted Sefton Council but believes the mess is an accident waiting to happen and is worried that the problem will only get worse as good weather continues into the summer months.

Angie told the ECHO: "The play area is just littered with cans. I'm just concerned for the little ones in there with half-empty cans of alcohol and sharp edges. Someone could get hurt.

"I just want to make sure someone is there to clean it up as it was horrendous. My daughter uses that park regularly with my grandson and that is the worst I've seen it."

Angie said that she messaged Sefton Council but has not had a response yet. Derby Park was opened in 1895 and is one of the most popular parks in Bootle.

Angie, 58 said: "If that has happened with the first bit of sunshine then what is going to happen for the rest of summer. So many children use that park, it is a safety concern."

A Sefton Council spokesperson said: “It's extremely disappointing to see litter being left in our children’s play area. Council Officers from Green Sefton and Cleansing, as well as our fantastic volunteer groups, all work tirelessly to keep our parks and greenspaces clean and beautiful.

"We have attended the park today and can confirm all litter has been removed from the area. It is a criminal offence to leave litter of any kind and can lead to a Fixed penalty Notice or prosecution."
