A nan said she was “shocked” after discovering she had won the lottery weeks after beating cancer.
Elaine Bailey from Whiston had just come out of hospital when she found out that she had won £30,000 on the Postcode Lottery. The nan of eight said that winning the money was a “big relief” as she had to take out her pension to pay her bills during her cancer treatment.
Since the big win just over 12 months ago Elaine said she has given some money to her grandchildren, bought a dachshund called Coco, and is planning to go on holiday later this year.

Elaine told the ECHO: “The day after I had come out of the hospital I got a call to say I had won but I did not know anything. I won with my next-door neighbour as it was a street prize.
“It was just a complete shock especially after coming out of the operation. My neighbour came over to my house and we opened it together. I could not believe it.”
Elaine who works at Tesco said that while many people would splash out on a new car, she is happy that her grandchildren were able to get some money from her.
Elaine who is 67 said: ”Everyone was just made up for as they knew what I had been going through. Coco has brought me so much comfort and I would not have been able to pay for her without winning the lottery. She gives me so much joy.
“I’m happy with how I have spent the money, otherwise I would have done things differently. As long as I have looked after my grandkids, have peace of mind, and my little puppy I’m happy.”
Elaine is jetting off to the Canary Islands later this year.
