Nagpur’s queen India’s pride: Divya Deshmukh is world junior chess champion

NAGPUR: Orange City’s chess queen Divya Deshmukh was crowned the new world junior girls champion at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on Thursday. In the 11-round World Junior Chess Championship, 18-year-old Divya lifted her maiden U-20 crown by collecting 10 points.

With this triumph, Nagpur’s International Master (IM) won her third world title. She had earlier clinched the world title in the U-10 and U-12 categories in 2014 and 2017 respectively. While representing India in 38 age category tournaments, Divya has won 21 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals, including winning the Asian youth title thrice before emerging as the Asia’s women’s champion last year.
