'Mystery sphere' washes up on Japan beach sparking investigation by baffled officials

A massive mystery sphere has washed up on a beach in Japan, with baffled locals dubbing it "Godzilla egg" and "from outer space".

The ball appears to be made of metal and was found by a local woman at Enshu beach, in the city of Hamamatsu. The woman contacted the police on Tuesday morning and the area was been closed off while the mysterious object was being investigated by an explosive team.

The ball is around 1.5 metres by diameter, appears rusty, suggesting it is made of iron, and has handle-like pieces of metal which would allow it to be hooked to something. Local media reports have said that X-ray scans have shown it to be hollow.

Inside a 200 metre enclosed area, explosive experts have been filmed wearing protective uniforms as they examine the ball. They later determined the object was not explosive lifted the restricted access, reported FNN. However, it's still not known what the object is. Images have been sent to the Japanese armed forces and coast guard for them to be examined.

There have been plenty of theories on social media about the origins of the mystery sphere. This comes at a time when mysterious objects spotted in the sky in the United States have cause much controversy and speculation.

What do you think the mystery object is? Let us know in the comments below.
