Mystery parasite that causes ‘explosive diarrhea’ spreads to 17 US states

  • A Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite outbreak has infected 145 people across 17 U.S. states between May 1 and June 16.
  • The infections have resulted in 20 hospitalizations, though no deaths have been reported from the current outbreak.
  • New York has the highest concentration of cases (31-80), with Illinois and Texas reporting 11-30 cases each, and other states having 1-10 cases.
  • Health officials believe the infections are linked to contaminated food consumed within the U.S., as none of the affected individuals reported recent international travel.
  • Symptoms of cyclosporiasis, which can last for weeks, include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue.
