Mystery of William Shakespeare’s London lodgings is finally solved

  • Professor Lucy Munro of King's College London has precisely located William Shakespeare's Blackfriars property in London, solving a 200-year-old mystery.
  • The discovery was made using three historical documents from the London and National Archives, including a detailed floorplan of the building.
  • The research confirms the property stood in what is now Ireland Yard, Burgon Street, and parts of 5 Burgon Street and 5 St Andrew’s Hill, validating an existing plaque.
  • This finding challenges the belief that Shakespeare solely retired to Stratford, suggesting he may have spent more time in London and potentially written some of his later plays there.
  • The substantial property, which Shakespeare bought in 1613, was sold by his granddaughter in 1665 and subsequently destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
