Mystery of student who went into bar 17 years ago - and was never seen again

A 27-year-old medical student went into a bar 17 years ago - but was never seen again.

Brian Shaffer, a pupil at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, decided to go on a bar crawl with his roommate to celebrate the beginning of spring break on March 31, 2006.

William “Clint” Florence and Brian headed out to the Ugly Tuna Saloona bar in Columbus’ University District at around 10pm.

They were relaxing by drinking shots and playing drinking games after a busy period studying.

The pair decided to leave the bar and made their way to Arena District and Short North.

William's friend, Meredith Reed, offered them a lift back to the Ugly Tuna where they would continue their night.

CCTV footage outside shows the three of them taking an escalator to the bar's second-story entrance at around 1.15am.

Brian then left to go outside at around 2am and was seen in conversation with two women before vanishing.

Meredith and William tried to phone Brian on multiple occasions but he didn't pick up and the calls went to straight to voicemail.

The pair left to go home after the bar closed and thought he would get back in contact with them the following day.

Randy Shaffer, Brian's dad, attempted to phone his son but his calls went unanswered over the weekend, which left him extremely worried.

And on Monday morning, Brian was booked on a flight to see his girlfriend but he failed to turn up to the airport.

He was reported missing that day and over 50 police officers were dispatched to search for the medical student.

Friends and family of Brian were questioned and passed lie detector tests - except for William who refused to comply.

However, the two women seen talking to Brian, were not required to take a lie detector test.

Alexis Waggoner, William's heartbroken girlfriend, called his mobile phone each day in the hope he would pick up but there was no answer.

Sadly, it would go straight to voicemail.

However, on one occasion in September his phone rang three times leaving Alexis hopeful he might still be alive.

But as his phone wasn't GPS enabled his location could not be found and his mobile provider claimed it could have rang by accident.

The Columbus Police Department were left stumped at the student's disappearance despite having dozens of CCTV of Brian.

He was last seen walking near the Ugly Tuna bar before heading out of shot.

The cameras, which were manually and digitally controlled, panned round but the student was not visible anymore.

Police believe he could have changed his clothes or left the bar through the back of a construction exit.

However, his parents reject the theories as they claim he had a bright future ahead of him and had nothing to hide from.

Brian's phone, credit cards and bank accounts were inactive for more than a year, which made his family start to believe he was never coming back.

Only his younger brother remains alive and is still searching for William after his mysterious disappearance.

There was, however, a possible breakthrough in 2020 when a picture that looked like Brian went viral on social media which appeared to show an American man in Tijuana, Mexico.

But after FBI extensive facial analysis, it turned out to be a homeless man - much to the heartbreak of his family and friends.

The FBI mocked up a picture of Brian to show what he would look like now but tragically there has been no reported sightings.

Central Ohio Crime Stoppers has offered a $100,000 (£80,000) reward for information on his whereabouts as his family and friends pray for his return.

And despite many theories Brian was living in another part of the world and under a new identity, it has never been proven, according to police.
