A man said he was immediately alarmed when he spotted two cars with matching number plates parked next to each other. John Gargett, from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, saw the two silver Mercedes-Benz C200 saloons on Hatherley Road, Eastwood.
According to the DVLA website, the number plate is registered to a silver Mercedes from 2006. It is taxed and its latest logbook was issued in January.
Mr Gargett told YorkshireLive : "Two cars parked across the street were on the same number plate front and rear. I reported this to 101. This was given a priority eight, and two PCSOs [police community support officers] attended."
South Yorkshire Police confirmed officers attended Hatherley Road and "spoke to the owner of both vehicles". A spokesperson said the two Mercedes-Benz cars were registered to different plates, although one of the vehicles is being used for spare parts.
The identical number plates were placed on the wrong vehicle, police said, but did not offer an explanation as to how this may have happened. They added: "Advice has been given and the mistake is being rectified."
