A mysterious and generous young man paid the bill of around £100 for roughly twelve people in a local foodbank’s café - with one worker describing him as someone “the world needs more of”.
The selfless act happened last Monday in the Charitea café run by Dumbarton foodbank, Food for Thought.
One person who was in the Charitea café at the time was Sam Paton, from Renton, who was visiting the café with her son when she received the act of goodwill.
She said: “You always hear bad news, so to see and experience this unsung hero doing something kind for no recognition was very lovely.
“It was so unexpected that someone wants to pay for our bill when you go for lunch with your son.
“All the customers donated what their bill was going to be to Food for Thought because we had that intention by going in anyway.
“We had a conversation with the boy, he was from Clydebank, and he was so kind-hearted.
“He told us, ‘if the world was a better place, then everyone would be nice to each other, and that’s why he is trying to be’. He was seeking no recognition, but everybody does deserve a bit of kindness.”
Food For Thought has seen a rise in the number of people seeking help, during the cost of living crisis.
Lorraine McLeish, operations administrator, told us why she believes the world needs more people like the young man. She said: “A woman came over to Food for Thought because she didn’t get to pay for her lunch because a kind young man paid for it.
“So when the café manager came over, he said that ‘he just insisted’.
“One of the customers asked him why he did it, and all he said was ‘to be kind’.
“I asked Eddie, the café manager, to send him over to make sure he was alright because it is not very often that someone pays for everyone.
“The boy said that he is in Dumbarton every week, and he just likes to give something back and help people wherever he can.
“I don’t know the boy’s situation, and I didn’t push, but the world needs more of that generosity.
“It was absolutely lovely. For me, he made people smile and the way he has made their day, just through the gesture alone, was wonderful.
“The job itself is overwhelming, but the good that you see from people like him.”
