More than 100 cases of dengue fever have been reported in the space of a month on a small island nation off the coast of Africa. The mysterious outbreak in São Tomé and Príncipe has prompted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to get involved to try and halt the spread of the virus.
All the cases on the island were reported between April 15 and May 17 - but the figure is likely an underestimate according to authorities. It is the first time in the nation's history that a dengue fever outbreak has been reported on the island, according to the Mirror.
Dengue fever is a severe flu-like illness caused by a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes. Health chiefs in the country say that so far no deaths have been reported but a response plan has been drawn up and epidemiological investigations are under way in several districts.
