It's never easy to deal with the death of a loved one, even when you have time to prepare for that happening. In some ways, it can be even harder to have practical conversations, including funeral arrangements.
One grandchild was left incredibly conflicted after being told by his grandfather that he didn't have long left, and asked him to make a promise. The grandfather, who always had a funny sense of humour, wanted to make one last joke before he died.
Taking to Reddit's TrueOffMyChest forum, the unnamed user explained: "He said he’ll give me his phone and after he dies, he wants me to use it and text everyone to thank them for coming to his funeral. Just to freak them out. It would be his last joke."
Unsurprisingly, the grandson is conflicted about what to do, because although he's "always had a crazy sense of humour," and they "do want to honour his wishes," this just seems "too far".
The forum user added: "I also don’t want to make him a promise now knowing that I’ll break it later on when he’s no longer around."
Most commenters on the Reddit post thought the grandad's prank was hilarious and in no way cruel, because it's "part of who he is".
One person added: "Everyone mourning him who knows him will be used to his joke like this and it will probably make their day to have him back even for a bit."
However, some people thought it might be a fun idea to get the grandad to make a voice recording instead of a text message, as then no one could blame the grandchild for playing a cruel prank without proof of the grandad asking for it..
One person suggested: "Why not just have your grandfather record a thank you message that you send to all of these attendees using his phone? That could help to alleviate any guilt on your part."
Another said: "Do it, it'll be funny, but definitely ask him if you can record his request just in case people get mad at you for doing it."
A fourth simply said: "I would do it, that's really funny", while another added: "If my grandfather had asked this I would've had SO much fun with it. Enjoy every second you have left with him."
