'My girlfriend's livid I haven't washed my bedsheets for 2 years - until mum came over'

A man has been slammed after admitting that he hasn't washed his bedsheets in over two years, and only decided to do so as his mum came over to do it for him.

Many have said that the dirty sheets must be "nasty" and "disgusting", but the man struggles to see the problem with the lack of cleanliness.

Taking to popular forum site Reddit, the man initially sought advice after his girlfriend "flipped out" and argued with him for refusing to clean the sheets until his mother did it for him.

He explained: "For context, I have an apartment that my family gifted me two years ago. I currently live with my mum and brother and stay there five to six nights a week."

The man went on: "My family is more traditional and my mum stays home to cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My gf and I have been dating for a year and she has not met my parents or been to my parent's house.

"I recently had some relatives come and stay, so my mum came over to wash my sheets, vacuum, and wash my floors.

"When I spoke to my girlfriend I mentioned this was the first time my sheets have been washed. My girlfriend flipped out and said I was a major a*****e for never washing my sheets.

"It turned into a long argument about how she feels excluded from my family and she can't deal with the situation anymore. I've been sick and she hasn't been understanding that I need more help."

Seeking advice, the man wrote: "There were other issues with my mum not liking her that she says hasn't been solved. So, am I the a*****e over not washing sheets?"

Since sharing the thread online, the man's post has raked in over 1,000 comments to date - where Reddit users said that the lack of washing was "disgusting".

One person wrote: "You haven't washed your sheets in two years? You're the a*****e. That's nasty."

A second added: "I hate NOTHING more than changing sheets- so I do mine every two to four weeks. Which is fully hygienic. A freaking year? disgusting."

While some people struggle to keep up with washing their bedsheets due to health issues, an expert has settled the long debate about how often you should wash your bedding and explained why it's important.

They said that if you're washing your bedding less than once a month, you could be unintentionally making yourself poorly, and also sleeping in a build-up of "grime and dirt".

Putting the debate to bed, Bedding experts at Bed Kingdom said: "Once a week is a healthy balance between washing sheets regularly enough to avoid the build-up of bacteria, germs, and dirt, without being so often that it becomes hard to fit into your routine."
