'My flat is caked in damp and mould is making my lung condition worse'

A mum, who wishes to remain anonymous, says her flat is 'caked in mould'. The situation has gotten so out of hand that she had been forced to bin mouldy clothes.

The woman moved into the property around a year and a half ago. When she first started to notice the mould she contacted her housing provider, but then in October it started to become really bad.

Initially, the housing association called Places for People, had someone come and take a look, and clean the mould. But the 27-year-old woman says she's yet to receive another home visit after contacting them three months ago.

Worryingly, she has a lung condition and believes the mould could be making it worse. She has been hospitalised several times with only 60% of her right lung functioning with very low air intake.

Speaking exclusively to Teeside Live, the mum said: "I noticed that in the cupboard, there was dampness in the hallway, it was caked in damp. I got Places for People out to come and check it over.

"They came out and cleaned it and then in October I phoned up to say that the damp was back in the bedroom now, and luckily it was just getting in my bedroom and not my son's bedroom. It was all over on my wardrobe and I have had to pull my wardrobe apart to take all the damp off it, clean up all the walls.

"I phoned [Places for People] and they said just clean it and we'll come out and fix it and we'll be there within 15 days. I said no problem - I've been going to work and I've been taking time off work because I've been bad again."

The mould has now gotten worse, having spread "across the full room" and covering all the electronics, the mum says. She said it has destroyed both her bed and carpet as well as numerous clothing items.

A Places for People spokesperson said: "Getting the right outcome for [name of woman] is the most important thing. We are working closely with [name of woman] to understand and resolve the issue and have arranged a date for initial assessment work to be carried out in her home.

"Once we’ve established the extent of any issues, we’ll continue to work with [name of woman] to ensure that any repairs recommended are implemented as quickly as possible. [name of woman] is happy with this plan."
