'My fiance won't speak to me because I've said I don't want Titanic-themed wedding'

A themed wedding can make for a genuinely lovely occasion - if it centres around something the couple both enjoy, whether that be football or white water rafting.

However, problems can arise if one of the lovebirds wants their special day to reflect an interest that the other one just, well, doesn't get. After all, this is supposed to be a celebration of a couple, not an individual.

Unfortunately, one groom-to-be has been left feeling conflicted after his fiance expressed a longing for their nuptials to be themed around the classic romantic tearjerker, Titanic. The fiance is said to be 'obsessed' with the movie, while he doesn't really care for it all that much.

Taking to Reddit's AmITheA**hole forum, the 23-year-old groom revealed that his fiance wanted to go all out for the theme, decorating an old hall like the Titanic dining room, with absolutely everything themed around Titanic or the 1910s.

As well as an iceberg wedding cake - arguably a rather morbid feature given the historical basis of the film - the fiance wants their first dance to be to the sound of Celine Dion weepie, My Heart Will Go On.

Indeed, their 33-year-old husband-to-be is so wedded to his vision that he actually wants them to dress up as the star-crossed lovers at the heart of the drama, with him as penniless artist Jack and the poster as "a male version of Rose".

The man behind the post isn't all that keen on the idea, which is totally understandable given that he isn't actually a huge fan of the tragic epic. Also, there are arguably less devastating films out there to think about as young newlyweds looking forward to a happy and hopeful future together.

With this in mind, the poster "figured that it'd be unfair to theme our entire wedding about something that only one of us cares about", and decided to broach the subject with their significant other. It didn't go down well.

Although they attempted to compromise and suggest that they "wouldn't mind some Titanic references here and there", their future spouse broke down in tears, declaring that a completely Titanic -themed ceremony was "the wedding he always dreamed about".

After this conversation, the disappointed fiance "stormed out of the house", being in no way prepared to meet his other half in the middle. Two whole days have gone by - more or less the length of Jack and Rose's entire relationship - and yet they still refuse to speak to him.

The poster reflected: "I feel bad for making him cry but I still think he's being unreasonable. I spoke to my parents about it and they said that if I want to get married I need to learn to make sacrifices so I should just go along with it".

Many of those commenting are completely onboard with the poster's understandable reservations, with a number of Reddit users noting that compromise in a marriage doesn't mean simply bending to the other person's will. Others feel the theme itself is a little crass regardless.

One person noted that "recreating a mass casualty event seems like a really strange way to view a marriage", adding "I feel like your fiance isn't interested in your opinion and that your presence at the wedding is less important than his tacky iceberg cake".

Another wrote: "Does...does he know what happened to the Titanic? What does a Titanic-themed wedding even look like? You drown a bunch of poor people and don't have enough seats for everybody? Everyone is cold?"
