King Street, off Deansgate, is where those with an eye for style -and money to spend - head. Loake Shoemakers, in business for more than 100 years, is the very best in shoemaking.
Inside its luscious interior is a welcoming atmosphere. That’s partly down to Matthew Griffin, 41, who is behind the till.
Dressed well in a pin-striped blazer, he’s the epitome of classic Manc cool, complete with a Gallagher-esque haircut. Raised in Newton Heath, he’s lived all over the city.

So, what makes the man tick?
Where’s your favourite hidden gem?
There’s a couple I have, but I’d go for the Sandinista bar on St Ann’s Square. I don’t need to explain it.
What’s your favourite view of the city or in the city?
That’s a good one. You don’t think of it, do you? When I used to live in Castlefield, I could see the whole of Manchester and the Pennines. I could see it all.
That would be my favourite that I can remember. Well, I can remember loads of views, but as favourites go, it’s a good one to look out of. I used to take pictures of it.
Where’s best to go for your dinner in town?
If I do go somewhere, often I don’t really have enough time, I’d say Fazenda. We used to go there for Christmas Dinner, it’s really good.
Where would you take someone to show them the real Manchester?
All of it! Northern Quarter, I’m a Manchester lad but that’s the spot.
What’s your favourite Mancunian neighbourhood?
I should say my hometown — Newton Heath — I suppose. I’d go for Chorlton though, it’s got a nice bit of character.
What are the five words that best describe the city?
Innovative, creative, wet, friendly, and strong sense of community. Oh, and cool.
City or United?
United.
Liam or Noel?
I will say Liam because he’s more down to earth. Noel’s talented, but he’s a bit of a d*** isn’t he?
Your favourite city pub is…?
I used to take dates on a pub crawl. Britons Protection.
Who is your favourite city ‘character’?
Boombox Barry.
What’s the one thing you’d add to Manchester if you could…
Some sunshine! If it was anything, I would put in a beach. I bet everyone says that, but a beach like Barcelona.
