Re your report (Brain has five ‘eras’, scientists say – with adult mode not starting until early 30s, 25 November), when my future wife announced our imminent wedding to her parents, her mother’s only advice was: “Don’t marry him – he’ll always think he’s 17.” As it turned out, she was quite right. The year was 1974, and I still behave pretty much like a 17-year-old, although I’m now 78.

• The question of whether rage rooms are really good for us (Report, 29 November) is a difficult one to answer. But I think Charles Dickens got there first with Mr Jarndyce’s “Growlery” in Bleak House. As he explains to Esther Summerson, his ward, “When I am out of humour, I come and growl here”.

• Re inaptly named places (Letters, 30 November), when visiting Manly, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, we had endless entertainment, as just about everything there was named after the town. My favourite was the Manly Ladies and Associates Swimming Club.

• The letter on inaptly named places reminded me of the Ugley Women’s Institute branch in Essex.
