Mustard diner in Altrincham closes just weeks after Sale branch

The popular diner Mustard in Altrincham has closed down, just weeks after it was forced to shutter its other restaurant in Sale. The Sale branch closed in November last year, after six years of trading.

It now emerges that the Altrincham branch, which opened in 2021 on Shaw’s Road in the Stamford Quarter, will close too. A message on the restaurant’s Instagram page said that it would be closed for the first week of January, reopening on January 9.

However, according to local Facebook page Altrincham HQ, the site will not be reopening. The Manchester Evening News has contacted owners for comment.

Run by husband and wife team Gavin and Jane Gosnell, the concept for the restaurants was picked up from a trip to New York to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. They returned with the idea to create a smart, independent neighbourhood diner, like those seen in Manhattan.

The restaurants served all day brunches, burgers, buttermilk fried chicken, as well as larger main course plates too. The Sale branch opened in 2016 on Northenden Road, before closing down in November.

The couple, whose hospitality experience included stints with everyone from Starbucks to Living Ventures, then acquired the site of the former Reel Time Amusements arcade in the thriving centre of Altrincham. It aimed to open in the autumn of 2020, but didn’t open its doors until 2021.

The news comes in the wake of an increasing number of closures in the hospitality industry. Bistrot Pierre in Altrincham closed its doors for good just after Christmas, citing staffing issues.
