Hulme’s ‘hidden oasis’ will be hosting a ‘three-part’ music festival all over the summer. Green Island will happen at Hulme Garden Centre, with support coming from the BBC Introducing strand, grassroots radio station Reform and Manchester brewery Seven Brothers.
With just 500 tickets available for each date, the events will happen on June 17, July 29 and September 9, with a host of local and international talent taking over the picturesque inner-city spot.
There will be three stages, street food operators, family activities during the day, DJ workshops and a wealth of music. Headlining the first event on June 17 with be BCUC, a seven-piece band from Soweto, along with ska band Galivantes, alt-rapper Charlie Boy Manson, Francs, The Goddess Collective, and singer-songwriter Caitlin LM.

The July and September sessions will feature the likes of Mim Suleiman, Afrodisia, Sham Steele, Abnormal Sleepz, PRIDO, Meduulla, Adjua, Electric Jalaba, The Beautiful Sinners, Mix-Stress and Me Gusta, with more acts to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, ‘family rave’ organisers The Playhouse Project will programme the early part of the events until 1.30pm, while dumplings and other Japanese-Hong Kong fusion cuisine will come from Didsbury set-up Midori. Plant-based street food will be supplied by the Boneless Brigade, and after parties until 3am will then take over at the nearby NIAMOS centre.
Co-founder Stephan Agbogbe added: “For us, Green Island is about giving a space to young creatives, helping them develop as artists by providing opportunities in physical spaces, booking them for their first gig, and encouraging them to establish their own network within the creative community here.
“Our main ambition for this festival is to work tightly with our partners and create long lasting opportunities for young people in the music industry and be a stepping stone for young emerging artists. For instance, the workshops will provide young people with skills which they can use in later life.”
