Mushy from Educating Yorkshire makes emotional update 10 years on from show

Musharaf Asgha, who first found fame on Educating Yorkshire, has shared an emotional update ten years on from the groundbreaking show's TV airing.

It has been a decade since Musharaf, affectionately known as 'Mushy', moved viewers to tears as he worked to manage his stammer during his secondary school days.

The Channel 4 documentary series followed the everyday lives of staff and pupils of Thornhill Community Academy in West Yorkshire and was first broadcast in 2013.

Mushy, who is now 26, was in year 11 when the show was filmed.

During the series, viewers watched Mushy overcome his severe stammer with the help of devoted teacher Mr Burton.

One breakthrough moment on the show was when Mushy was preparing for a ten-minute speech as part of his English GCSE exam when Mr Burton suggested Mushy should try rehearsing his lines will listening to music to help his stammer.

The trick enabled Mushy, who had difficulty communicating with his teachers and fellow students, to speak fluently without stammering.

Mushy shared a photo of himself when he was back at school wearing a green uniform and blue tie next to a current picture, where he is wearing a smart suit and tie.

He captioned the post: "For weeks I’ve contemplated my existence, trying to understand where I fit in the world. Today I woke up aged 26 realising how important my life is. 10 YEARS AGO I featured on Educating Yorkshire and life has been crazy. Thank you for the support throughout the years. God bless."

Mushy now works as a keynote speaker and journalist.

Fans flooded to the comments to praise him for his success, calling him an 'inspiration'.

One person said: "As a teacher myself, watching you on tv all those years ago made me realise why I do what I do. You are so important and inspirational. Hope you are okay. You’ve got this."

His confidence grew and he found a speech therapist that understood and helped him even more. The spark of hope for him was you !! I wanted you to know how inspirational you are to others even on your darkest day."

A third person commented: "I show the gcse exam video to each class I teach. Its inspirational and it let's them know that limitations can be overcome. Thank you for being brave and sharing your experience with the world."
