Inspectors have warned they are 'very concerned' about safety at a Leeds prison for young people that saw dozens of attacks on staff and peers last year.
HMP Young Offenders Institution (YOI) Wetherby had 37 inmates who had either been sentenced or remanded for murder, attempted murder or manslaughter as of August 2022. In a recent inspection report published February 2 by the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB), inspectors noted that there had been 100 assaults on staff from September 2021 to August 2022.
Inspectors said in the report: "The Board has been very concerned at the level of safety at Wetherby this year, although this is not surprising, given the high-risk nature of the population. Insufficient staff, and the lack of experience of some staff, contributes to the challenge in managing the risk effectively."
