MUMBAI: A man stabbed his wife 12 times and killed her near New Excelsior cinema in the wee hours of Friday, said the police. The couple lived in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, with their five-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter.
The police said that after the attack, the man, Kiran Dane (28), threw the knife and stood at the spot, not moving.
“For the last 10 to 12 days, the husband and wife were staying separately,” a police officer said. “Dane, who worked in a gold melting unit at Masjid Bundar, called his wife, Mahadevi, on Thursday night and told her to meet him in south Mumbai. ”
After Dane had dinner with a friend, Rajesh Patil, he asked him to accompany him to Fort. Mahadevi, too, arrived there from Vashi.
“She didn’t know the route and asked a hawker, Asif Ansari, who had missed his train and was going back to stay near his workplace,” the officer said. Ansari (35) guided and dropped her near the location she mentioned.
Dane, who had already reached the meeting spot with his friend, Rajesh Patil, pulled out a knife as soon as Mahadevi arrived and began stabbing her, said the police.
Patil and Ansari tried to stop Dane, but a furious Dane would not stop. He slashed the two men on their hands and stabbed his wife on the chest, stomach and hands. A bleeding Ansari came to the police station and narrated the incident. The police also received acall about the incident.
Ansari was sent to GT Hospital and a police team went to the spot. They took Mahadevi to GT Hospital, but doctors declared her dead. Patil was also treated at GT.
The couple hailed from Sangli. Mahadevi had left her children at Dane’s brother’s home in Vashi.
