Mumbai: 3 held for extorting from NRI’s son got funds into their accounts

MUMBAI: The city crime branch probing an extortion case in which three youngsters extorted Rs 6.48 crore from an NRI woman’s son by threatening to get him arrested in a drug case has found transactions in the bank accounts of the three accused.

Police will ask the banks for detailed statements of the three accused for last year.

On Saturday crime branch unit 12 arrested three persons — Yash Chalke, Shratik Sonawane and Prath Shinde. “We produced them in court and have got four days police custody. We have got their transaction details but we want to verify with the banks. We are also checking how and where they used the proceeds of crime which is a big amount,” said DCP (detection 1) Sangramsingh Nishandar.

Police said they will also call those who aided and abetted the accused. The complainant had said that the accused Chalke had brought some local politicians to their house to threaten them. “We will see why these local politicians had come with the accused,” said Nishandar.

The complainant is a non-resident Indian working in a shipping company in the USA. Her son, while studying in a coaching class in the suburbs, became a friend of Chalke. The police said that the three accused had also sodomised the complainant’s son and made a video and again blackmailed and demanded more money from him.
