Mum threw pet bird in boozy row with boyfriend before racially abusing police

An "animal lover" hurled her canary bird at a chair in an alcohol-fuelled spat with her partner.

Victoria Close, 33, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the pet at her home but claimed that she "loved her birds".

The incident then escalated as she began racially abusing a Cleveland Police officer in a 15-minute ordeal as she was taken Middlesbrough police station, Teesside Live reports.

Close, of Maple Street, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to two charges at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The mum claims she "can't remember" the incidents that occurred on November 3 and didn't mean to "offend anyone".

She admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal by throwing a canary bird at a chair.

After entering her guilty plea, Close said: "I'm guilty but I love my birds."

Close also admitted racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress on the same day.

Following her admissions, Close added: "I couldn't remember what I had done but I'm not a racist person."

Prosecutor Paul Doney told how Close has been in a nine year relationship with her partner and Cleveland Police officers were called to the Middlesbrough address on November 3 in response to a "domestic incident".

Her partner requested that she was removed from the property and Close was taken to Middlesbrough bus station.

Then later the same day at 2.50pm, police were alerted to another "domestic incident" at the address.

As officers approached the Maple Street property, one officer heard "raised voices" and when a male opened the door, they also heard "metal rattling".

Mr Doney outlined how the officer saw a "yellow object" being thrown at an armchair.

There was also "two yellow birds flying around the room".

Close was described as being "heavily drunk" and "failed to calm down".

She was arrested and taken to Middlesbrough custody suite, however, on route she became "verbally aggressive".

At around 3.20pm, an officer was conducting a welfare check in the police van when Close began her racial attack.

Mr Doney told how Close made "persistent" racial remarks to a female officer and shouted the disgusting comments for around 15 minutes.

"F***ing Muslim b****," Close shouted at the police officer.

Paul Dixon, mitigating, asked the magistrates' bench for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

The Middlesbrough court heard how Close "suffers from mental health problems" and "acted out of character".

Mr Dixon said: "Before this day she had taken medication and alcohol and was feeling down.

"It is out of character because she is an animal lover and is in a relationship with a Muslim and her daughter is a Muslim."

He added that she "hadn't meant to offend anyone" by her actions or remarks.

The defence solicitor also told how the canary was one of four birds that Close has "looked after and loved".

The magistrates' bench ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared before Close learns her fate.

She will appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court for sentencing on March 11.

Close was granted unconditional bail until that date.
