Mum shares her secrets as she saves £912 a year by cancelling three bills

A mum has shared her secrets after she managed to save £912 per year by cutting just three bills.

Lynn Beattie, who is better known as Mrs MummyPenny, has become a personal finance guru with a blog and podcast about saving money and home budgeting. She has revealed some of her top tips on the day budgets rocket for millions of people across the country.

The single mum lives in a four-bed semi-detached house with three children and used her circumstances so others can compare and know what to expect for their own households. She claims to have saved almost £1,000 a year just by cancelling non-essential bills.

Speaking to The Mirror, Lynn said: "Every few months I go through my essential bills and direct debits to rationalise what I can cancel and where I can get a better deal. I want to share what essential bills I have kept, how I’ve got a great deal and what I pay to compare to yours."

The money saver said she started by cancelling non-essential bills such as streaming services and recipe boxes. She advised people to 'be strict' with what they don't really need.

Mrs MummyPenny said: "These creep in, free trials that you forget to cancel or services that you are not getting your monies worth. Go through your list of monthly bills and be strict, cancel those that you don’t need.

"In the past few months, I have cancelled Amazon Prime (£7.99), Disney+ (£7.99), bi-weekly Mindful Chef recipe boxes (£60 per month). Just these three cancellations saved me £76 per month, or £912 per year. It really is worth being strict and cancelling what you do not need."

She also has a tip to cut energy bills - which are going up from April 1, she said: "Check to see if you are in credit on your energy bill, if so you have a case to get your monthly direct debit reduced." Lynn cuts her water bill by having a meter and taking shorter showers. And she switches broadband provider every 12 to 18 months.

Lynn said: "Switching from EE to Virgin broadband recently netted me an extra £105 cashback via TopCashback and saved me £30 per month." She has also switched to a sim-only contract for her mobile phone saving £30 a month.
