A mum has shared her hack for saving money when it comes to the weekly food shop, saying that the method leaves her with six weeks’ worth of extra cash.
The top tip was posted on Mumsnet after someone asked members of the site for their “most ingenious” money saving advice. The user took to the popular Am I Being Unreasonable forum to ask fellow families for any clever cost-cutting ideas “that people might not have thought of before”.
The user explained: “The tip I always give is menu plan and shop once a week but actually make your week 8 days. On day 8 use up all the odd bits and pieces in the fridge.

“That way you have 46 shopping weeks in a year and gain 6 weeks’ extra housekeeping money. This funds our Christmas.”
The advice was applauded by fellow Mumsnet users. “This is genius!” one person praised.
Another added that they do something similar when it comes to their food shop. “I buy ‘meals’ for about 5 days and cobble something together for the other 2 - leftovers, store cupboard bits, stuff from the freezer, etc.,” they explained.
The meal-planning advice would also help to cut down on household food waste, with a recent survey indicating that every adult in the UK bins £572 worth of food each year. Other tips on the thread included cutting dishwasher tablets in half, using bathwater to water the garden, and switching appliances off at the wall rather than leaving them on standby.
