Mum says 10 days is the perfect amount of time for a family holiday

A mum has opened up about why she tries to avoid booking two-week-long family holidays - and people are fully behind her decision.

That's not to say she doesn't favour a two-week break; but she prefers to stick to just 10 days of actually being on holiday.

The parent shared their thoughts on Mumsnet, explaining that if they book a longer trip they often regret it, and end up wishing they "could have had a few days at home".

She admitted that when it comes to 14-day holidays, "every single time I get to about day 10 and am fed up and want to be at home".

In the post, she explained: "I've nothing to complain about except the bed is a bit uncomfortable and I should enjoy my last 3 days of sun and relaxing - but all I can think about is that if I'd bloody remembered and booked 10 days, we'd be flying home tomorrow and I could have had a few days at home in my own bed before going back to work...."

However, the rule seems to apply predominantly to beach holidays in European hotspots, as she adds: "I never feel like this on far flung holidays with a packed itinerary etc and holidays are always a few years between so I obviously forget and get all giddy with the booking."

It seems that fellow parents agree too, with the majority of responses in favour of the 10-day break instead of 14 days.

One user wrote: "Yes I’ve always said 10 days is just perfect!", with others agreeing that leaving a few days to relax at home was often a huge help.

One holidaymaker claimed to be on an 11-day holiday for that reason, writing: "Currently got 4 days left of an 11 day holiday (day 11 is travelling home). Got 2 more days off when we get home to catch up on washing, visiting and doing very little. Perfect!"

Do you think two weeks is too long for a holiday? Let us know in the comments below.

Any parent who's planned a holiday with kids will know that there's plenty of admin to be done before you head off to the airport - so it's not surprising to see that families are giving themselves a 'buffer' to return to normality after a break.

The good news is that if you're planning a getaway, there are some easy hacks to make life that little bit smoother. For a start, members of cabin crew have shared their top tips for flying with children, including how to avoid jet lag and keeping them entertained in-flight.

Oh, and don't forget to check airline hand luggage rules to help speed up the airport security process, such as the 100ml liquids rule. (If you're travelling with a baby, the 100ml rule differs for baby milk ).

And of course, arguably the most stressful part of the trip is trying to pack everything and stick to luggage limits - luckily, flight attendants have shared their easiest packing tricks and tips.
